The Renaissance is one of the historical periods that have elicited vigorous debates among the historians and scholars. The term â€Å"Renaissance† for me, before taking this unit, is just a word that reminds me of some well-known historical events and famous Renaissance men, for example, Columbus’s voyage discovered the America, Dante wrote the famous masterpiece The Divine Comedy and Da Vinci ‘s the priceless work Mona Lisa. My understanding of the period consists merely of those single people and events that seem unrelated. I hear the term frequently when it comes to the history of European civilization that I barely have any knowledge of. There are many misconceptions for people like me who has a general idea on the period but don t know much detail about it. By taking this unit, some of my misconceptions have been corrected, and I get to see the whole picture of the Renaissance—we studied the cause of the revolution during the Middle Age and how the p rocesses going of people exploring the world as well as themselves. The Renaissance is commonly believed as a rebirth of culture during the period of 14th to 17th century and also considered as a bridge connecting the medieval and contemporary history. It is true to some extent, but not accurate. Renaissance is not only a revival of classical arts or the literature but also a significant change in the structure of the society and a reunion western world. When you are reading a poem or a short story there are so many other things that are connected to the story that people usual do not look at. But when you do break down a story or poem to look for what it really means that it is called literary analysis. A good piece of work to use is Edgar Allen Poe s The Raven. The Raven has a lot of different literature elements at work such as symbolism, theme, POV. In the Raven Edgar writes a poem about a man that is very sad. The man is sad because he misses his loved one her name was Lenore. The man cannot forget about Lenore and every night the man is visited man the Raven. Short Summary.....The Lady is the main focus for the man she contains his every thought. He brings her up when every chance he can in the poem. The end of the war was signed with the treaty of Versailles. From the war was born the League of Nations; who helped nations resolve disputes peacefully without going to war. When the League was formed, the defeated nations were not invited to join. The League originally had forty-two members. All forty-two members made up the assembly, who met once a year. As incidents occurred more often there was a smaller group of nations who made the council. The council had four permanent members Britain, France, Italy and Japan. From the beginning the league had a major weak point, which was the USA’s refusal to join, ironically it was Woodrow Wilson’s idea to form the League of Nations. Most of the League’s successes were in the 1920’s, mainly problems to do with territory. In 1921 the League was invited to settle a dispute between Finland and Sweden. In between the countries were the Aaland Islands; both countries claimed the land belonged to them. The league awarded Finland the land, this was a success; moreover a lucky decision. The members state reluctance to meddle with disputes other than their own. This did not affect the leagues reputation as much as the clash had occurred in Europe. In 1935 the league attempted to intervene between in the dispute between Italian aggression and Abyssinian troops. The league could do nothing. The league had to take action if Italy invaded although the league had no armed orces or any nation that wished to help. So the league condemned all members for trading with Italy. Although Britain and France undermined this decision. Eventually the emperor of Abyssinia fled to Geneva where he addressed the council and protested against the failure of the league, this marked the end of the leagues existence. In conclusion was the league a success at all? The league did have successes and would h ave had many more but the member nations were not ready to co-operate. It is fair to say the league was a failure although it is not fair to say it was failure due to its structure. The failures of the league do outweigh the successes. The league did fail in co-operation and working in unity. The major member states were to blame mainly due to their selfish decisions and disagreements against the league. The league was a success to the extent where decisions did not require armed forces or going against a large nation. The failure of the league was not of the covenant but of the members themselves. In an ironic way the league brought hope for future organisations to be formed and to work in unity.
